PROTOGENOS is a limited edition, mixed-media piece by Samuel Webster, inspired by Rafael Bonachela’s LANDforms, a new work for Sydney Dance Company. The book itself is a 60-page, full colour publication, a collection of Samuel’s poetry and photography, written and captured during the choreographic process of LANDforms. Each copy is uniquely numbered, and autographed by Samuel Webster and Rafael Bonachela.
“I met Samuel first through the poetry of his writing before I met him personally, but there was an immediate recognition of a remarkable spirit…
I am in awe of the way in which he can capture the physical art of dance,
the aural art of music and grasp inner meaning which he effortlessly
translates into words. It is such a gift.”Rafael Bonachela
Artistic Director – Sydney Dance Company
PROTOGENOS draws its structure from the Greek gods of the land and presents itself as a rally towards a greater, more optimistic social conscience.

Samuel Webster is a Sydney artist working in the mediums of writing, photography, film and music. In 2006 and 2010, Samuel won the National Youth Week talent competitions for writing and film respectively. As a music critic, he has been immersed in the Sydney arts scene for many years before, after coming disillusioned with the limitations of the critical form, turned his hand to creating a new online magazine which specialised in publishing creative responses to artistic events, instead of opinion pieces. Where Thelonius Monk said ‘Writing about music is like dancing about architecture’, Samuel took it as challenge and not detriment by publishing a form which treated representation on an equal footing with critique. The online journal Mood of Monk launched in November of 2010 and within a matter of days, Samuel was invited by Rafael Bonachela to spend time in the Sydney Dance Company studios, to experience the creation of LANDforms, and create a piece of his own. The result is Protogenos, a series of visual poems written in response to Bonachela’s choreography, presented alongside Samuel’s photography of the rehearsal process. Protogenos represents the essence of Mood of Monk’s artistic drive.
In 2010, Samuel Webster completed his Masters in Creative Writing at Macquarie University, and is working on a children’s book, poetry collection and debut novel.
