So today I decided I’d have a shot at what Bert Stephani has the guts to pull off for 50 days, shooting only with a 50mm… I was meeting a friend for coffee so on the train there and back I shot what I could.
For those who aren’t gear nerds, a 50mm is a prime lens which usually allows a high quality glass at a cheaper price. The exceptional thing to the 50mm challenge is that you cannot zoom with a prime lens. So to make a new composition you have to move, and in doing so, the perspective shifts… You cannot get sneaky candids at 20ft…
It was an amazing challenge, but incredibly liberating in its restriction.
Here are the shots I got, embedded large to save any trouble. Hope you like them, pass on the link if you do. Nothing thematically strong, purely aesthetic.

awesome shots. I particularly like
– the old man with the hat and the painting above him
– the bird shots
– the front on escalator shot
cool treatment too.
